Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay to Establish New Guinness World Record

Humana and Guinness World Records® ask: Why Not You?!

AUSTIN, Texas—August 11, 2009 – At the 5th Annual Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay, scheduled for September 27, 2009 at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas, every participant has an opportunity to become a part of running history. The Humana “Why Not You?!” Challenge for a Guinness World Record will award the fastest overall marathon team with a submission to Guinness World Records for consideration for the fastest ever five-person marathon relay Guinness World Record.

“We believe in the importance of leading an active, healthy lifestyle, and we encourage people to find fun in exercise, such as setting a Guinness World Record for a relay marathon,” said Jerrod Helms, practice leader, Large Business, Humana Central and West Texas. “Our employees and their families participate in the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay year after year and the addition of the challenge for the Guinness World Record gives all of the event’s participants an added incentive not only to participate in this event, but hopefully make running and other healthy activities a part of their lifestyle.”

With no Guinness World Record currently listed for the fastest five-person marathon relay time, the Humana “Why Not You?!” Challenge will submit the race’s overall champion team for consideration for a newly established Guinness World Record. The current course record for the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay is 2:21.15, set last year by Team Jack and Adam’s.

“Not only will this be our largest relay ever, but we’ll be attempting to set another record as well,” said Dave Swincher, race director and president of Junior Achievement of Central Texas. “The team that wins this year’s Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay will be submitted to Guinness World Records for consideration as an official Guinness World Record after they cross the finish line. You don’t get to do or see that every day.”
Proceeds from the race benefit Junior Achievement, the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to teaching elementary through high school-age children the values of fiscal and economic responsibility. Junior Achievement works across the globe to provide students with a deeper understanding of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

In its fifth year, the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay draws a crowd of over 2,000 runners and their families. Ranked as the second largest stand-alone marathon relay event in the nation, the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay is also the opening event for the Austin Distance Challenge, a series of major running events, finishing with the Austin Marathon. Runners who raise $750 for the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay gain free entry into the rest of the Distance Challenge series, and the money they raise will help fund JA programs in Central Texas schools.

Some additional highlights of the 5th Annual Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay include:
• The race takes place on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 7:00 AM.
• The race is broken into five legs run in the following order: 12K, 10K, 10K, 5K, and 5K.
• The accurate and well-marked course features running routes that pass some of Austin’s most scenic landmarks, including Lady Bird Lake and the historic Texas State Capitol grounds.
• All relay legs hand off in the same location near the start/finish line, making it easy for spectators to cheer for participants throughout the event.
• Kid-friendly activities, open spaces and food vendors at Auditorium Shores make the Relay an event for the entire family.
• Fundraising for Junior Achievement is easily accessed along with race registration and comes with greater incentives than ever before.

The Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay is sponsored by Silicon Laboratories. Additional sponsors include Humana, Hospira, HEB, Papa John’s, RunTex, Third Rail Creative, News 8, Virgin HealthMiles, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide and American Airlines.
